LAN Ettiquette
Lan party etiquette can be summed up with 4 basic rules, or as I prefer to refer to them, the 4 R's:
- Respect other people's right to enjoy themselves.
- Respect other peoples personal property.
- Refrain from being too loud
- Robert is cool.
Respect other people's right to enjoy themselves.
Don't use lame ass d.o.s. attacks, it just gets on other peoples nerves.
If someone is fragging you too often, get up and snap his keyboard in half over your knee (in this case rule #2, respect peoples property, is void), don't put him through the agony of a slowed connection.
Try not to personally abuse people too much, as it can lead to grudges, and fraying tempers, making a fun LAN quickly disintegrate into a drunken orgy of violence.
When people are becoming abusive, just inform everyone of the problem, and get them all to promptly reply to any of his questions or comments "SHUT UP [insert name here] WE ALL HATE YOU!".
This will quickly bring them back to reality and they will begin to act normal again.
If this is ineffective refer to forementioned keyboard-snapping technique.
Respect other peoples personal property.
This means, most importantly, that you never touch another person's computer if they have not given you permission, or if they are not present.
This is the same for computer paraphernalia as well, for example CD's, headphones etc.
Ignorance of this
rule will usually result in you being distrusted, or smacked upside the
head, depending on the persons emotional disposition.
Refrain from being too loud.
As LAN parties are often held at friends'
houses, deep in the midst of suburbia, there are people in near vicinity that
can often be disturbed by loud distorted sounds.
Always remember to bring a set of headphones, and keep cries of joy and anguish to a dull roar.
And the last, yet most important rule concerning LAN party etiquette.
Robert is cool.
Whenever near him remember to bow, and/or offer quantities of highly caffeinated beverages.
Failure to comply with this rule will without fail result in immediate confiscation of all personal belongings and banning from any social events ever.
