Packing List

First time to a LAN? Here's a guide to having a fun, enjoyable LAN specifically related to FragFest events.

What do I bring?
Things you'll probably want to bring with you are:

  • Any medication you may need
  • A computer, loaded with all the games you wish to play
  • Your Monitor
  • A mouse and keyboard.
  • Mousing surface (ie mouse mat)
  • A few power leads (Y power leads are ideal)
  • A network card, installed into the above computer
  • As there is only one power outlet available for each player, you will need your own powerboard.
  • A copy of your operating system and device drivers in case you need to reinstall.
  • Spool of cd's/dvd's
  • A usb stick
  • Headphones! If you don't have a pair, buy some! Speakers are not allowed.
  • A can of deodorant
  • Mobile phone & phone charger
  • and for the really astute lan gamer - a roll of toilet paper (you never know)
  • A plastic storage box or gym bag is worth investing in - makes carrying all your things in much easier!

Additionally, we are happy to facilitate religious needs such as a quiet room for prayer.

Preparing your computer
Before the event, you should make sure you have all the games you wish to play installed and patched to the latest version so you can spend the least amount of time at the event setting them up and more time playing!

Steam (Counter-Strike, Half-Life, etc) can be rather troublesome at LANs so make sure that it is fully updated before the event and that it is working fine in offline mode (disconnect your internet, exit and reopen Steam and attempt to run your games) otherwise you may find that you will not be able to play them when you're there.

Setting up your network card to work with the FragFest network is really simple and is covered in a separate guide here. (TODO: network guide)

Rule of thumb for powerboards: if its rattling dont use it!
Just go down and buy a new 4 outlet powerboard for like $3 or something. Woolworths often has 2 packs for $5. Then you have one for you and one for your mate for $2.50 each.

Tip: having your case open is also a bad idea.

Tip: People who LAN frequently, often have a whole separate set of cables for the lan. For example, I unplug my monitor, sound, network and power. Put my case and monitor in the car. Then put my keyboard and mouse in my LAN bag and off i go. I dont have to worry about massive amounts of clambering under desks replugging before and after.
