Chris on AutumnLAN

With no major issues all day we feel that the event was quite successful. We tried out a couple of new things this time including servers out the back as well and tighter controls on the internet access.

Power:
Once again, power was solid thanks to our investment in the power upgrades to the hall. YAY.

Network:
The network ran very well, we moved the servers out the back and connected them by a fiber link. At first, we had issues getting any of our switches to play nicely on the other end of the fiber link so we went and borrowed a Cisco switch from deans work and it went quite nicely from there on.

We were a tad concerned about the network leads leading up to the event. We were pleasantly surprised however when there was only one issue and after putting a cable tester on it, it turned out to be just a mis-crimping which was easily fixed but chopping the end off and putting a new one on. BAM.

DCHUB:

Of course the dc hub was back. It seemed to go strong for the most part. There were a couple of issues with people using non standard clients (myself included but that ok cause I can only complain to myself and I know better) and a mish mash of different client versions and varying hashing methods. I COULD put client enforcements back on but when they were on there were too many people complaining that they couldn’t connect so I turned them off.

Internet Access:

The internet access received some attention in the network development department this time round after last time when it was flogged to death by bit torrent clients and whatnot rendering it pretty much useless. We installed some more functional firewalling this time round allowing only web access, msn and steam.

For future reference, the major motivation for supplying internet access is allow steam to connect and therefore behave itself. We also figure that we may as well offer access to web browsing and MSN simply because we can without smashing it but it isn’t the primary reason for it being there. There were few people trying to play WOW over it. I don’t know who they were but things like that bring the connection to its knees rendering it useless for everyone hence we’ve now blocked everything bar basic essential services.

Free Play Gaming:

Ahhh the reason why you should all be coming!

There were a few free play servers running the entire day including HL2DM and UT2004. There were a few occasions where they were quite popular providing good fun gaming. We would like to see more of it!

Tournaments:

Thanks to the Gamespace team for managing the CS:S and the BF2 tournaments. I didn’t really hear a great amount about them so I’m assuming no news is good news. There was a lot of competitive noise surrounding the games which says to me that people were having fun though which is great.

Thanks again to the Gamespace team!

Multimedia:

The use of the projector this time round was much more appropriate in terms of the information it provided (eg. Schedule, food prices etc).

There were numerous complaints as to volume. I myself received at least 3 and I know dean got his share as well. We wholeheartedly agreed with those complains at the times they were received and the issue was discussed at our post lan staff meeting and hopefully it won’t be an issue in the future.
