DjZoRt speaks on MayLAN
This event was excellent, for once nothing really went wrong! The two new three phase outlets went in the day before and they supplied betty with plenty of juice for everyone. More on that later...
The community centre has again proved to be a great venue (minus the dead a/c), with the discovery of the rear loading bay minimising our back breakage factor in setting up. We also arranged a few hours on friday night to get things all set up, keeping saturday morning stress (mine especially) to a minimum.
Network
As always, solid performance from our good old cabletron systems stack. No problems with servers, with a mix of fibre and copper connection. We didnt get the internet going. Perhaps next time =\
Servers
The windows BF2 dropped its guts severally at the start of the BF2 tournament with very serious and fatal hardware failure. This really wrecked up that tournament.
Other than that, wolfmans servers ran solid all day with no dramas. So big thanks to wolfman again for powering the gaming!
We are looking forward to new web based administration in the not too distant future.
Projector and Sound
We hooked into the hall sound system which kept sound distributed nicely. Tiesto featured, as well as BF2 spoofs and a bunch of south park.
Intranet
The intranet basically ran the DOW tournament for us. So that was good. It was of some benefit with other tournaments - but only partially. People arent using it enough yet.
Power
MayLAN saw the introduction of powerboard replacements which were very well recieved. Ben and I made them up and had them tested etc. They are basically 15amp extension lead with double power points mounted on blocks and then mounted to board. With cable clamps and so forth inside to keep everything strong. So everyone now has their very own power point with an on off switch. So much safer.
As also mentioned we had two three phase outlets installed and they gave us plenty of power and no outages through out the day. Thanks to HIX for putting them in, although we had to pay for it all Wink Still, its better than a generator
Prizes!
Big thanks to Corsair for the three gigs of memory and the lanyards which we forced everyone to wear after entry (with name tag attached). Also big thanks to Tin Soldier penrith for the gift certificates and other give aways which went out to the Dawn of War winners!
Atmosphere
This was a friendly and social event. Lacking somewhat in gaming most likely a result of too many people leeching. Its like the dark side of the force, its hard to resist but its really not that cool - betraying you in the end.
Conclusion
Thankyou to everyone that helped us out throughout the day, in setting up in the morning, and in cleaning up at the end, your help is greatly apreciated, and without that help, we just wouldn't be motivated to run the lans for you at all. Hope to see you all soon at our next event JulyLAN.
