A LAN in Winter
Deans Review
well i will write something verbose as i have a bunch of time on my hands.firstly, ben martin - thank you for your support. people may not know this but saturday was his birthday and he still was there to run the lan. the bbq has become an important revenue stream and also a time out to chat to people. without ben this would not happen. so once again, ben you are awesome.
we were down quite a few staff. namely chris, russell and miles. we felt their absence but jonothan stepped up and really shined.
wolfgang ran excellent servers and ben mckinlays input was essential also. thanks to michael for the gig switch and also for the mixer. thanks to element (who's actual name escapes me) from helping with set up etc.
also thanks to everyone who put their rubbish in the bin and packed up their tables. especially peter, who is always amazing when we pack things up.
there were really no problems during the whole event. no power problems, no network problems. the firewall was having some random weird problems which were being solved by a reboot. we may go and buy it a new pcmcia network card as the current one we just found. doing that solved problems on the dhcp server when we first started using the laptops. so why not.
what else is worth mentioning. well substandard speeds on the gig section can be attributed to the following
- the sender sending lots of data
- the receiver receiving lots of data
- the sender throttling transfers
- the senders hard disk being slow
- 32bit gig ethernet cards at either sender or receiver
anyway there are lots of reasons, because 1gig ethernet is really really fast compared to hard disk speeds and bus speeds. transferring at the full gig (especially with thorough crc and related error checking) can be very exhausting on a system.
tournaments went well enough, they seemed to stay on schedule. i think the dawn of war guys had a really good time. day of defeat source kind of fizzled with lack of numbers (ie 2 teams). unreal tournament 2004 onslaught seemed to go down well. sorry about the messed up server settings. i think the tournaments served to get organised games going, without making hysteria for prizes. although that doesnt mean we are going make a habit of lowsy prizes.
dance dance revolution seemed to be well received.
i actually thought the hall was cold!
